spring.

Its springtime again, and that means change is in the air! it really does. first highlight of the spring: its time for the annual harvesting of the spring onions!
this tradition has been going on for a while. i'm pretty sure since i was seven!
me and owen are the only ones who do it, but its still fun.
two years in a row, i tried to dry them out on the clothesline so i could pestle them.
and one year i had them in scrambled eggs! mmmmm. we usually do it went its good and warm outside. that way, we can wear short clothing so we don't get too much dirt on our clothes. and an even better reason, thats when the spring onions grow. we don't grown them wild, they're just their. along with wild strawberrys, common wood sorrel, flea bane, and who knows what else! i can't really remember why we started doing it. i guess one year, seven year old me thought it would be fun to pick the onion grass instead of just looking at it. i got owen to join, and voila! a tradition was born. this year, mom didn't like us harvesting the onions. it would have been fine, but when we whacked the grass against the side of the house, it got a ton of dirt on the patio, and when we washed them we got the sink all dirty, and when owen got out a bowl to hold them he broke one. oh well. and now, how to harvest and prepare your spring onions! its real simple. first you dig a hole around the onion grass, as close as you can to the plant. then you grab it as close to the root as possible, and yank it out. then you have to get rid of the dirt. i usually just whack it on the side of the house a few times, and that does the trick.
if you want to put them in scrambled eggs, heres how you do it:
first, follow steps one through three of how to pick them. then wash them. then, separate the grass from the onion. put the onions in the fridge to save them, and any extra onion grass.
then, chop the onion grass up into small bits. finally, proceed to make scrambled eggs, except when you're done stirring them, pour in the chopped up onion grass. Bon apetit!
and remember, there is DEFINITELY onion grass in your backyard. you just have to know what it looks like. of course, if you live in, like, greenland, there won't be onion grass. sorry.
another highlight of the spring: we put the hammock back up! it goes up inside our house, so i had to clean like crazy to make room for it. the hammock is REALLY fun! it quadruples as a swing, a bed, a couch, and a game. (i get on the hammock and start swinging, and owen runs back and forth in front of me, trying not to get hit.) i really like our hammock.
Yet another hightlight of the spring:
i'm getting new glasses soon! i think somewhere around the 15th. i know that isn't really much of a highlight, but its still exciting.
another highlight of the spring:
the St. Patrick's day parade!!!!!!! my brother goes for the candy they throw off the floats,
my dad goes for who-knows-what, and me and my mom go for the bagpipes!
last year was really fun. my friend grace (who is actually irish!) came into town to visit her cousin, and we got to march in the parade, (apparently there's a part of the parade called "irish heritage" that lets anyone march in it.) and, the biggest highlight of the day was, i got to go to graces cousins house to play, and while we were there, the mayor drove up and i got to meet him!
Final highlight of the spring:
the spring is the warmest month of the year that i get to play with lucy, before she goes on her annual summer vacation. (every year she goes to California for three months with her grandma, who they don't see often because lucy moved to New Jersey.)
all in all, spring is the very best month there is.
